Semi Zabala and X-FAB Collaborate on Rad-Tolerant and Rad-Hardened GaN-on-Si Solutions for Aerospace and High-Reliability Applications

Donostia–San Sebastián, Basque Country, Spain – Dec 17, 2025 Semi Zabala, a specialist in the design, manufacture, test, and qualification of radiation-tolerant and radiation-hardened semiconductor devices, today announced that it has partnered with X-FAB the leading analog/mixed-signal and specialty foundry.

Together, the companies will deliver next-generation Rad-Tolerant and Rad-Hardened High- Reliability (HiRel) solutions for the aerospace and HiRel markets based on advanced Gallium Nitride on Silicon technology.

This collaboration unites Semi Zabala’s extensive experience in radiation-resilient design and qualification with X-FAB’s proven GaN-on-Si platform and industrial, high- reliability semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem. The result will be robust, secure European based supply chain engineered to meet the stringent performance and reliability requirements of HiRel, New Space and Traditional Space missions.

GaN-on-Si for Mission-Critical Applications

GaN-on-Si technology provides significant advantages for high-power, high-efficiency, and high-temperature environments frequently encountered in aerospace and HiRel systems. Through this partnership, the companies will deliver:

  • Rad-Tolerant and Rad-Hardened GaN power devices engineered for extreme radiation exposure

  • High-efficiency power conversion optimized for satellites, launch systems, and other HiRel platforms

  • Extended mission lifetimes through radiation-resilient design and qualification

  • Secure, traceable, European based manufacturing aligned with HiRel supply chain requirements

Semi Zabala brings proven radiation performance to the partnership. The company has previously demonstrated full immunity to Single Event Effects (SEE) with Au ions up to 600V. Additionally, Semi Zabala’s technology has achieved Total Ionizing Dose (TID) up to 500 kRad, validating its suitability for long-duration and deep-space missions along with propulsion and surface power applications.

Strengthening European Based Strategic Capabilities

As Europe’s space and HiRel sectors continue to expand, sovereign access to radiation- resilient GaN technology is increasingly vital. Semi Zabala’s vertically integrated

capability—design, manufacturing, testing, and qualification—combined with X-FAB’s HiRel-capable GaN-on-Si processes provides:

  • A fully European based supply chain

  • Long-term process availability for HiRel and space programs

  • Reduced time-to-qualification for flight-worthy devices

  • Scalable, industrial production capacity for strategic applications
