Donostia-San Sebastián – November 2024 Semi Zabala announces participation in the ESGAN Consortium as part of the Horizon Europe Research and Innovation programme.

Semi Zabala will coordinate and take part in the ESGAN (European Space GaN) consortium that has the goal of designing and validating a 200V platform of Gallium Nitride (GaN) HEMTs that will be resistant to the extreme conditions of space especially radiation. The European Union is funding this effort to achieve the goal to establish a fully European GaN transistor supply chain to increase European competitiveness in the space industry.

In addition to coordinating the consortium Semi Zabala’s role will be that of designing and packaging the GaN HEMTs. The starting material will be supplied by Aixtron who will also be optimizing their reactor equipment as part of this effort. Subsequently the designs will be fabricated by XFAB in Dresden, Germany. Finally Airbus will be performing space level evaluation tests including reliability and radiation on the devices in typical application configurations.

The project is funded by the European Union under the Horizon Europe Research and Innovation programme under the HORIZON-CL4-2024-SPACE-01-73 topic: “Space technologies for European non-dependence and competitiveness”. The project will start on February 1st 2025 and will have a duration of 3 years. Further information can be found about ESGAN here.
